We have all heard our share of myths about hair growth, but which of these 8 myths are actually true?
Well, we are here to clear these up for you!

1. Hair grows from the ends : FALSE

Your hair does not grow from the ends! It grows out of your scalp, from the roots. That is why you see a line of demarcation a few weeks after you color your hair; your hair is growing!

2. Hair grows exactly 1/2 an inch a month : FALSE

Everyone’s hair grows at varying rates. Some people have hair that grows closer to 3/4 of an inch a month while others have hair that grows 1/4 of an inch a month, and everything in between! While it IS true that the average hair growth per month is about 1/2 an inch, it isn’t exactly that amount for everyone!

3. Getting frequent haircuts will make your hair grow faster : FALSE

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but frequent haircuts will not make your hair grow faster. However, what regular trims DO is keep split ends at bay and keep your hair healthy as you are letting it grow. If you go too long in between haircuts, split ends will travel further up the hair strand, allowing your hair to become weaker and break easier, making it feel as though your hair isn’t growing. When you do finally go for a cut, you’ll have to have a lot more cut off at one time to make it healthy again.

4. Coconut Oil Will Make Your Hair Grow Faster : FALSE

Coconut oil is great for a lot of things, but hair growth is not one of them. As a matter of fact, too much use of oils like this in the hair can actually clog the pores in your scalp which can stunt hair growth. Hair oils are still great for moisture though so when you are using oils in your hair, keep them on the mids and ends of your hair only!

5. Massaging Your Scalp Can Help With Hair Growth : TRUE

Yes, this one is, indeed, true! Regular scalp massage stimulates blood flow to scalp and helps distribute the natural oils of the scalp, which can help promote a healthy scalp and hair growth. It is also incredibly relaxing!!

6. Your Hair Grows Faster In The Summer : TRUE and FALSE

Wait, what? How can this be both true and false? A lot of people notice that their hair does, in fact, grow faster in the summer. That is most likely due to the fact that a lot of people are much more active in the summer, allowing a stronger blood flow to the scalp (just like with scalp massages). If you are not more active in the summer than you are during the rest of the year, then you may not find this to be true for you. Maybe you are most active during the winter months, then you might find you hair grows faster in the winter. So, this one is pretty subjective.

7. Medications Can Affect Hair Growth : TRUE

Medications can have a VERY strong impact on hair growth, and your hair in general. Some medications can cause hair loss, brittle hair, slowed hair growth, and can affect color results. Asking your doctor for information on how medications can affect your hair and letting your stylist know if you are on these medications can be very helpful!

8. Supplements Like Biotin and Prenatal Vitamins Help Promote Hair Growth : TRUE

Biotin is a B vitamin. A biotin deficiency can lead to thinning hair. It is believed that taking biotin can help stimulate hair AND nail growth. Prenatal vitamins are usually high in iron, folic acid, and sometimes biotin as well. All these together are believed to help stimulate and promote healthy hair growth, skin, and nails. Many women opt to take prenatal vitamins even when they aren’t pregnant due to these benefits!
